“…Tritium spectra were referenced to the proton resonance of TMS with a conversion factor of 1.06663974 for obtaining the equivalent tritium frequency (Bloch et al, 1947; Anderson & Novick, 1947;Bloxsidge et al, 1979). Tritium is spin 1/2 so that its line widths are directly comparable to equivalent proton line widths.…”

“…A similar Li→T replacement has been proposed by Paudel et al in a study of tritium diffusion in γ-LiAlO 2 ; 5 the model presented here ignores defects and atomic displacements of the γ-LiAlO 2 lattice caused by neutron irradiation, 21,22 but the effect of structural distortions on the 3 H NMR spectra is expected to be minimal (vide infra). With this model of the local structure around tritium sites, the contribution of 27 Al and 6,7 Li dipolar interactions to the second moment of the 3 H NMR lineshape can be computed from the equation 19 where γ is the nuclear gyromagnetic ratios, T denotes tritium, S corresponds to the 27 Al or 6,7 Li nuclear spin, r T,k is an internuclear distance, and the sum is performed over the S spins surrounding the tritium site. Equation (1) neglects the effects of tritium motion, which is presumed to be slow on the NMR time scale for this model.…”

“…The magnitude of Δ will depend on the mix of lithium isotopes in the sum in Equation 2, and has a maximum value of 5.97 kHz when the four lithium sites are filled exclusively with 7 Li, which has a larger γ and S than 6 Li. Conversely, Δ is at a minimum when every lithium site is occupied by 6 Li, which results in Δ = 5.01 kHz.…”

“…The neutron moment has been recently redetermined (Bloch, Nicodemus and Staub 1948) using a method in which the magnetic field is stabilized by using the proton resonance . The proton-deuteron ratio has also been measured by Roberts (1947b) and Bloch, Levinthal and Packard (1947) using water samples and by Bitter et al (1947 c) using liquid hydrogen and deuterium. Very high accuracy can be achieved by using a sample containing both protons and deuterons so that, by applying two frequencies simultaneously, both resonances may be displayed on an oscillograph screen and the frequencies then adjusted until the exact resonance points are in coincidence.…”
