Spiky Strings and Gauge Theory Partons

Abstract: We propose a correspondence between strings with cusps which approach the boundary in AdS and energetic partons in the dual gauge theory on S3. In particular, the momenta of individual quanta on S3 are identified with certain collective coordinates associated with the cusps. We check the correspondence by studying the known exact string solutions, as well as a large class of approximate solutions, in the limit of large AdS angular momentum.

“…The same dispersion relation obtained from an integrable SL(2) spin chain was reported in [18]. The spin chain description of such spiky strings were explored in detail in the series of works [19][20][21][22]. The other much discussed form of gauge-gravity duality comes in the form of strings in AdS 3 × S 3 × M 4 and the two dimensional CFTs.…”

“…Building on these considerations and on Witten's [5] and Klebanov's [6] results concerning stacks of coincident D-branes, Maldacena [7] conjectured the now wellknown AdS/CFT correspondence 1 . The statement, in its strongest form, is that N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory on R × S 3 with gauge group SU(N) is equivalent to type IIB superstring theory on AdS 5 ×S 5 , provided we identify the parameters of the two models as follows:…”

“…In [1], the above proposal was tested on two explicit spiky string solutions which had already appeared in the literature: the GKP folded rotating string [46] (see Fig. 1.2) and the symmetric spiky string found by Kruczenski [102] (see Fig.…”
