Sphingomonas aquatilis sp. nov., Sphingomonas koreensis sp. nov., and Sphingomonas taejonensis sp. nov., yellow-pigmented bacteria isolated from natural mineral water.

Abstract: The taxonomic status of four strains from several mineral water sources in Taejon, Korea, was examined. The DNA base compositions of these strains ranged from 62 to 66 mol %. All of the strains contained sphingolipids and ubiquinone 10 as the main respiratory quinone. The cellular fatty acids of these strains included octadecenoic acid, hexadecanoic acid and 2-hydroxymyristic acid, without 3-hydroxy fatty acids. On the basis of morphological, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, together with 16S … Show more

“…There are a few cases of PD-associated peritonitis caused by Sphingomonas paucimobilis reported but none reported for Sphingomonas koreensis to date (4). The first evidence of Sphingomonas koreensis being a human pathogen was just recently published, in a case where it was the causative agent of meningitis in a patient (5). Sphingomonas koreensis is a gram-negative, rod-shaped, aerobic, yellow-pigmented bacterium with single polar flagella and derives its name from the fact that it was first isolated in natural mineral water in Korea in 2001 (6).…”

“…The chemical properties of strains [Sphingomonas] xenophaga DSM 6383 T (Stolz et al, 2000) and [Sphingomonas] taejonensis DSM 15583 T (Lee et al, 2001), nitrate reduction, polyamine pattern and fatty acid profiling, also indicate that the strains show a strong associations with members of the genera Sphingobium and Sphingopyxis, respectively.…”

“…On the basis of our findings, we propose to reclassify [Sphingomonas] xenophaga Stolz et al 2000 and [Sphingomonas] taejonensis Lee et al 2001 as Sphingobium xenophagum comb. nov. and Sphingopyxis taejonensis comb.…”
