SPHEREx: NASA's near-infrared spectrophotometric all-sky survey

Abstract: SPHEREx, the Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and ices Explorer, is a NASA MIDEX mission planned for launch in 2024. SPHEREx will carry out the first all-sky spectral survey at wavelengths between 0.75µm and 5µm with spectral resolving power ∼40 between 0.75 and 3.8µm and ∼120 between 3.8 and 5µm At the end of its two-year mission, SPHEREx will provide 0.75-to-5µm spectra of each 6. 2×6. 2 pixel on the sky -14 billion spectra in all. This paper updates an earlier descr… Show more

“…All three mirrors in the SPHEREx telescope have a high-order Zernike freeform prescription [2][3] . The surface sag of each is plane-symmetric across the YZ-plane and defined by the summation of a spherical base curvature and Zernike terms.…”

“…The SPHEREx telescope is an F/3, telecentric, off-axis, "all-aluminum" freeform reflective triplet, with short-wave infrared (SWIR) and mid-wave infrared (MWIR) detection channels separated by a dichroic beam splitter (DBS) [1][2][3][4] . The telescope has an 11.3 x 3.5 deg full field of view (FOV), operates at cryogenic temperature and lacks a focus mechanism on either focal plane assembly (FPA).…”

“…The Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer (SPHEREx) is a NASA Astrophysics Medium Class Explorer mission led by principal investigator Jamie Bock of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). [1,2,3,4] The mission is a joint operation between NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Ball Aerospace, and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in collaboration with the Korean Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). The instrument is jointly developed by JPL and Caltech with Ball Aerospace providing the spacecraft bus and JPL providing overall management of the mission.…”
