SPHERE: BIM Digital Twin Platform

Abstract: SPHERE (Service Platform to Host and sharE REsidential data) is a 4-year Horizon 2020 EU-funded project, carried out by 19 SMEs, RTOs and Large Enterprises across Europe. The platform aims to provide citizens, AEC stakeholders, as well as city administrations and urban developers, with an integrated ICT platform that will allow for a better assessment and development of the Design, Construction and Performance of residential buildings. SPHERE platform will facilitate improvements in the energy performance of b… Show more

“…Fault detection and diagnostics issues in built environment can be found in [73] towards improved Building Information Modeling (BIM) systems. In [74], the authors introduced BIM digital twins for better assessment and development of the design, construction and performance of residential buildings. A full scale digital twin of a district heating and cooling network aligned with the visions of Industry 4.0 can be found in [75].…”

“…Digital modeling and complementary data matching are carried out based on technologies such as BIM to integrate different algorithms and simulations. Alonso et al (2019) pursued a four-year EU-funded Digital Twin project named SPHERE (Service Platform to Host and SharE Residential data), aiming to provide an integrated ICT (Information and Communication) platform for better design, construction, and performance evaluation of residential buildings. In addition, Mohammadi and Taylor (2019) proposed a game-theoretic approach that aimed to enable the analysis of city-scale Digital Twin.…”

“…Their purpose is to create a complete replica or digital twin of any given built asset, which could act as a substitute or replacement of the latter in several processes. The concept of digital twin has gradually become commonplace jargon among AEC/FM practitioners due to a combination of technology push and market pull [10]- [15], but it has not reached yet the same maturity in the context of the built environment as in the manufacturing and production disciplines [16]- [19], where the bulk of digital twin literature can be found [20], [21]. As a result, the term is still lightly used, even if industry actors do not fully understand its technical and managerial implications.…”
