“…Several Permian fossil‐species have deeply incised pinnules on bifurcate‐pinnate fronds lacking pinnae below the main frond dichotomy, and often with rachises with a corrugated surface, e.g., Sphenopteris geinitzii Göpp., S. kukukiana Gothan & Nagalhard, S. valentinii G.Forte & Kerp (reviewed by Schweitzer, 1960; Forte & al., 2018). Based purely on morphological criteria, these fossil‐species are clearly compatible with Sphenopteris , and there is little doubt that they were foliage of gymnospermous seed‐plants (see comments by Forte & al., 2018: 66). However, there is no direct evidence (e.g., reproductive structures, rachis anatomy) that they were from lyginopteridalean plants, as would be implied by assigning them to Sphenopteris (at least as defined here).…”
