The Botryosphaeriaceae represents an important and diverse family of latent fungal pathogens of woody plants. While some species appear to have wide host ranges, others are reported only from single hosts. It is, however, not clear whether apparently narrow host ranges reflect specificity or if this is an artifact of sampling. We address this question by sampling leaves and branches of native South African trees from four different families, including Acacia karroo (Fabaceae), Celtis africana (Cannabaceae), Searsia lancea (Anacardiaceae) and Gymnosporia buxifolia (Celastraceae). As part of this process, two new species of the Botryosphaeriaceae, namely Tiarosporella africana sp. nov. and Aplosporella javeedii sp. nov., emerged from sequence comparisons based on the ITS rDNA, TEF-1α, β-tubulin and LSU rDNA gene regions. An additional five known species were identified including Neofusicoccum parvum, N. kwambonambiense, Spencermartinsia viticola, Diplodia pseudoseriata and Botryosphaeria dothidea. Despite extensive sampling of the trees, some of these species were not isolated on many of the hosts as was expected. For example, B. dothidea, which is known to have a broad host range but was found only on A. karroo. This could have resulted from the fact that it is a rare species in the region. With the exception of S. lancea, which was infected by A. javeedii all the hosts were infected by more than one Botryosphaeriaceae species. Collectively, the results suggest that some intrinsic host factors, possibly combined with local environmental conditions, affect the distribution and co-infectivity of various hosts by the Botryosphaeriaceae. 2This would counteract the general ability of a species in the Botryosphaeriaceae to infect a broad range of plants. The combination of host and environmental factors might also explain why some Botryosphaeriaceae with apparently broad host ranges, are found on different suites of hosts in different areas of the world.

Espécies de Botryosphaeriaceae são importantes patógenos em diversas plantas lenhosas e não lenhosas, causando diferentes tipos de sintomas. Espécies desta família são usualmente consideradas patógenos fracos, causando doenças apenas quando estas plantas se encontram sob algum tipo de estresse como seca, temperaturas baixas ou elevadas, deficiência nutricional e danos causados por outros patógenos ou pragas. No entanto, pouco se conhece sobre a ocorrência e diversidade de espécies de Botryosphaeriaceae em plantas nativas do bioma Caatinga, localizado no Semiárido, e sobre a presença de fungos endofíticos nessas espécies, e muito menos sobre a sua importância como patógenos. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a patogenicidade de 74 isolados representando Espécies de Botryosphaeriaceae (Dothideomycetes) têm distribuição mundial, sendo encontradas em todas as regiões geográficas, incluindo áreas de clima tropical, temperado e até em ambiente marinho, com exceção das regiões polares (2,34,35,38). Já foram relatadas infectando plantas do grupo das monocotiledôneas, dicotiledôneas e gimnospermas, e até liquens (1). Seus hospedeiros incluem uma diversidade de plantas de importância agronômica, florestal e ornamental (1, 8). Chrysoporthe austroafricana (Cryphonectriaceae) is a damaging canker pathogen onEucalyptus species in Southern Africa. Recent studies have shown that the fungus occurs on native Syzygium species and that it has apparently undergone a host range expansion from these native trees to infect non-native Eucalyptus. The aim of this study was to consider whether C. austroafricana and other Cryphonectriaceae might exist as endophytes in native Myrtaceae, providing a source of inoculum to infect non-native Myrtales. Healthy branches were collected from Myrtaceae in 1 Mozambique, incubated in florist foam, allowed to dry gradually and monitored for the appearance of fruiting bodies resembling species in the Cryphonectriaceae.Isolates were identified based on DNA sequence data. Two species in the Cryphonectriaceae were obtained, representing the first evidence that species in the Cryphonectriaceae occur as endophytes on native Myrtales, thus providing a source of inoculum to infect non-native and susceptible trees. This has important implications regarding the movement of planting stock used by ornamental tree and forestry enterprises.
