Daily spermatozoan output from the urogenital tract (DSOU), scrotal circumference, testis weight, and the numbers of spermatozoa in the epididymis and other parts of the urogenital tract were measured in 10 rams. Testis weight and the numbers of spermatozoa in the head, body, and tail of the epididymis and in the vas deferens and ampulla were found to be bilaterally symmetrical in each ram. The daily spermatozoan output from the urogenital tract was linearly correlated with testis weight (r = o· 83), with epididymal spermatozoan reserves (r = 0'86), with extragonadal spermatozoan reserves (r = 0·90), and with the total number of spermatozoa in the urogenital tract (r = O· 84). The significance levels of the regression coefficients indicated that these parameters would give good estimates of each other. The total number of spermatozoa in the urogenital tract of all rams at slaughter divided by the predicted time taken for spermatozoa to traverse the tract was found to be approximately 6% below the mean value for the daily spermatozoan output of all rams.

There were large variations among 67 Merino and 25 Romney rams in testes weight, number of sperm in the testes, number of sperm per g testis, and number of sperm in the epididymides. Correlations among these variables are presented. In Merino rams the in situ measurement of scrotal volume combined with age gave good estimates of testes weight (r = 0.91), number of sperm in the testes (r = 0.77), and number of sperm in the epididymides (r = 0.82). In Romney rams, scrotal volume, scrotal circumference, mean in situ diameter, and length of the testis and the 2: length x diameter-of the testes (testes volume) were compared as indirect methods of estimating testicular measurements. Except for testis length, which had lower relationships, all the in situ measurements had similar correlations with the testes weight (r = 0.92-0.94), number of sperm in the testes (r = 0.74-0.78), and number of sperm in the epididymides (r = 0. 61-0.67). Scrotal volume had the advantage of high coefficients of variation (36% for Merino and 29% for Romney rams) and a high between-operator correlation (r = 0.96) and within-operator repeatability (0.97) . 291

The mean daily output of spermatozoa was estimated for each of eight Merino rams from the numbers of spermatozoa eliminated from the urogenital tract both in the urine and in spontaneous discharges over 20 days (DSOU) and by doubling the number of spermatozoa collected daily from one testis by a rete testis catheter (DSOT). The two estimates (DSOU and DSOT) were highly correlated (r = 0·999), but the DSOU was usually a little lower than the DSOT. The mean difference was 3·4%.The effect of 20 ejaculations collected over 2 days was studied in four rams. The DSOU was severely depressed for a period of 9-16 days after the ejaculations but when the number of spermatozoa ejaculated was added to the DSOU in this period the mean daily spermatozoan output was similar to that in the periods immediately preceeding and succeeding it.It is concluded that the daily spermatozoan production of rams may be estimated accurately from the number of spermatozoa eliminated daily from the urogenital tract. It is unlikely that significant numbers of spermatozoa are resorbed or phagocytosed in the epididymides of normal rams.
