Sperm storage in males and females of the deepwater shark Portuguese dogfish with notes on oviducal gland microscopic organization

Abstract: Sperm storage in males and females was studied for the deepwater shark Portuguese dogfish Centroscymnus coelolepis. In males, sperm is stored in the seminal vesicle from early maturity stages until mating. The epithelium of the seminal vesicle secretes an acid mucopolysaccharide that might preserve sperm until it is released. The oviducal gland (OG) presents the four distinct zones described for other elasmobranchs: club, papillary, baffle and terminal. Mature, pregnant, resting and regenerating females are ab… Show more

“…The same pattern was observed in the same species by Pratt (1979Pratt ( , 1993, who described those same characteristics for Carcharhinus obscurus and Sphyrna lewini (Pratt, 1993), classifying this system as long-term sperm storage. The same characteristic was suggested for M. antarcticus (Storrie et al, 2008) and Centroscymnus coelolepis (Moura et al, 2011).…”

“…The material secreted in the two zones is identified as neutral mucopolysaccharides, but there is a great diversity in the chemical nature of the mucus, which varies according to the reproductive mode of the species (Rusaouën, 1976apud Hamlett et al, 2005Moura et al, 2011). The glandular cells found in these zones were not very evident under LM, and a large number of nuclei in glandular tubules were observed.…”

“…Given the semi-solitary nature of tiger sharks, the optimal time for copulation may not be compatible with the optimal time for fertilisation or birth (Moura et al, 2011). Reports of mating before parturition Randall, 1992) and post-partum females with the presence of sperm in the uteri (this study) are in contrast with other studies that found post-partum females without the presence of sperm (Prasad, 1945).…”

“…Oviducal sperm storage in elasmobranchs has been well documented (Pratt, 1993;Hamlett et al, 1998;Parsons et al, 2008;Moura et al, 2011), however the strategy of sperm storage employed by different species varies greatly. Prasad (1945) was the first to identify oviducal spermatozoa in the posterior shell-secreting tubules in female G. cuvier from India.…”
