Sperm package morphology in scorpions and its relation to phylogeny

Abstract: Sperm packages are widespread in the order Scorpiones, but absent in the family Buthidae. The morphology of sperm packages is diverse and apparently has phylogenetic information. The objectives of this work were to show diversity of sperm packages and to provide a quantitative basis for using sperm packages' morphology as a taxonomic character. For this, we conducted a morphological analysis and comparison of the different sperm packages of species of the family Bothriuridae. The seminal content from males of … Show more

“…Sperm length was measured indirectly as the length of sperm packages per species. Sperm package’s length is considered a reliable measure of sperm length and both measures, spermatozoa and sperm length, correlate [42] , [48] . Mean value of sperm package’s length was recorded per male (N = 10 sperm packages per individual) and then averaged per species.…”

“…Sperm is transferred indirectly to the female genital opening, by means of a sclerotized spermatophore deposited in the substrate by the male [40] . Scorpion spermatozoa are long and commonly transferred as sperm packages [41] , [42] . All scorpion species are viviparous [40] and in general females are polyandrous, capable of storing sperm in paired seminal receptacles [43] .…”

“…Firstly, each female copulates with more than one male per reproductive season (Peretti 1993;Vrech et al 2011). At the same time, males can accept more than one female during the entire reproductive season (Peretti 2003).…”

“…So far, studies on T. elegans have only focused on the description of the reproductive system (Peretti & Batta´n-Horenstein 2003), sperm conjugation and its morphology (Vrech et al 2011), as well as on the effects of polyandry on testes mass (Vrech et al 2014). However, the volume of the storage organs and ejaculates, their concentration, and the dynamics of sperm production in light of consecutive mating events have never been evaluated.…”
