Sperm-cell ultrastructure of North American sturgeons. I. The Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrhynchus)

Abstract: Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrhynchus) and lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) sperm-cell morphologies were examined using scanning electron microscopy. Major differences were found in four of nine metrics, all in the head region of the cell. Atlantic sturgeon sperm cells were much shorter than those of lake sturgeon. Anterior head width exceeded posterior head width, in contrast to the arrangement in lake sturgeon sperm cells. Lake sturgeon sperm cells are nearer in size to those of other sturgeons than a… Show more

“…Generally, the sperm head in fishes is relatively small (2-4 μm) in relation to the total size of sperm. The exceptions were observed at Atlantic eel sperm [5,31] and at sturgeons and paddlefish Polyodon spathula (Walbaum) with elongated sperm head up to 10 μm in length and over 2 μm in width, containing acrosome [5,31,32,33,34,35,36,37] or acrosome less [38].…”

“…In the sturgeons the longest spermatozoal head is that of the white sturgeon (10.52 mm) (Cherr & Clark, 1984), while that of the Atlantic sturgeon is shorter (3.98 mm) (DiLauro et al, 1998). The total head length (the sum of acrosome length, nuclear length and midpiece length) of paddlefish spermatozoa is about 5.85 mm.…”

“…Centrally located nuclear fossae were found in sperm nuclei of white (Cherr & Clark, 1984), stellate (Ginsburg, 1977), Atlantic (Dilauro et al, 1998) and shortnose (Dilauro et al, 1999) sturgeons and garfish (Afzelius, 1978).
