Spent coffee grounds (SCG) are a current subject in many works since coffee is the second most consumed beverage worldwide; however, coffee generates a high amount of waste (SCG) and can cause environmental problems if not discarded properly. Therefore, several studies on SCG valorization have been published, highlighting its waste as a valuable resource for different applications, such as biofuel, energy, biopolymer precursors, and composite production. This review provides an overview of the works using SCG as biopolymer precursors and for polymer composite production. SCG are rich in carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and minerals. In particular, carbohydrates (polysaccharides) can be extracted and fermented to synthesize lactic acid, succinic acid, or polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). On the other hand, it is possible to extract the coffee oil and to synthesize PHA from lipids. Moreover, SCG have been successfully used as a filler for composite production using different polymer matrices. The results show the reasonable mechanical, thermal, and rheological properties of SCG to support their applications, from food packaging to the automotive industry.

Fermented Coffee Grounds Diminish Livestock Odors: A Microbiome Study

Livestock odors are unavoidable problems in modern industrial society. We foresaw a role for fermented organic wastes in controlling odorous gases. In this study, we applied fermented coffee grounds to the floor area of a dairy cow barn and assessed alterations in odor compounds and a microbial shift over a period of three weeks. The treatment dramatically reduced ten odor compounds (more than 50%), highlighting the utility of fermented coffee grounds as an excellent product to reduce odors derived from cow manure. By the end of the treatment, the microbial consortium showed increases in rare families whose prevalence and abundance before the treatment had been low. Network analysis manifested 23 bacterial families dominant in fermented coffee grounds, negatively connected with odorous compounds, indicating potential odor-reducing bacterial families. This study provides an insight into using bacteria at the community level as a treatment to solve an environmental issue; simultaneously, it suggests proper usage of organic wastes by recycling them as fermenters for beneficial bacteria.

The production of degradable packaging materials is a task that can be no longer postponed. Moreover, high amounts of agricultural wastes are landfilled without any recycling. In this research, the possibility to formulate particulate composites made of biopolymers filled with coffee waste with acceptable physical and mechanical characteristics that will degrade is investigated. The addition of this agricultural waste, by reducing the requested amount of biopolymer, can decrease the overall price of the material presently the main limiting factor to the use of biopolymers in the packaging industry. Silverskin, the integument of coffee beans discarded during the roasting process, after a milling step, is added up to a 30 wt% either to polylactic acid (PLA) or to a blend of PLA and polybutylene succinate. The filler can be homogeneously dispersed in both systems. The data shows that the silverskin filler increases the elastic modulus but decreases the tensile strength of the material and helps the development of crystal phase in the matrix. The thermal stability and the hydrophobicity of the materials stay almost unchanged on filler addition. Moreover, data shows that the addition of silverskin increases the materials susceptibility to microbial attack.
