Speech reception threshold benefits in cochlear implant users with an adaptive beamformer in real life situations

Abstract: When tested in challenging and realistic noise environments, the Naida CI UltraZoom adaptive beamformer resulted in significantly lower mean SRTs than when the T-Mic alone was used.

“…On the other hand, the Naída CI processor was highly preferred in general, for its design and also for its performance, which is enhanced by the new front-end features available. 12,13 With the large number of features and options available on the Naída CI, it could have been expected to contribute to increased difficulty in counselling recipients. However, counselling was found to be equivalent to the Harmony.…”

“…They include an adaptive beamformer option called UltraZoom, which improves hearing performance in noisy conditions, specifically when speech is coming from the front and Binaural VoiceStream Technology™. 12,13 Many implant candidates now receive bilateral implants and Binaural VoiceStream Technology on the Naída CI provides wireless transmission of data between devices, allowing bilateral cochlear implant users to synchronize hearing across the two ears. 14 DuoPhone and ZoomControl deliver the signal picked up on one side of the head, to the contralateral ear and QuickSync allows for easy, instant and simultaneous adjustments of volume and program settings on both Naída CI sound processors by adjusting the settings on only one sound processor.…”

“…Most CI recipients complain about difficulty understanding speech in noise at signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) that would have little impact on speech understanding in listeners with normal hearing (Gifford and Revit, 2010). Present day devices are equipped with directional microphones and signal processing algorithms that can result in improved speech perception in difficult listening environments (Geibler et al, 2015;Mauger et al, 2014). However, the improvements in speech perception offered by these advances remain poorer than what listeners with normal hearing would achieve under similar listening conditions, especially when signal and noise are co-located in space (Gifford and Revit, 2010).…”

“…Directional microphones and dual-microphone technologies also can improve speech understanding in noise for implant users. AB's T-Mic and UltraZoom and Cochlear's zoom and BEAM microphone technologies provide noticeable benefit for listening to a speaker directly in front of the listener in a noisy environment (Geissler et al, 2015;Gifford and Revit, 2010;Mauger et al, 2014;Wolfe et al, 2012).…”
