Speech Act Theory as an Evaluation Tool for Human–Agent Communication

Abstract: Effective communication in task-oriented situations requires high-level interactions. For human–agent collaboration, tasks need to be coordinated in a way that ensures mutual understanding. Speech Act Theory (SAT) aims to understand how utterances can be used to achieve actions. SAT consists of three components: locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. This paper evaluates the agent’s verbal communication while collaborating with humans. SAT was used to anatomize the structure of the agent’s… Show more

“…Shriberg et al (1998) used prosody and ASR to classify speech as dialogue acts. Hanna and Richards (2019) have shown that a clear understanding of a conversational system's intended dialogue act correlates with high acceptance and understanding of the system's proposals. A similar high-level approach for tagging user speech in modern ASR systems is intent classification, where speech of some length, typically sentencelength or longer, is classified to approximate the intention (Ajzen, 1991) of the user (Purohit et al, 2015;Larson et al, 2019).…”

“…For example, in order to analyse the perceptions of interactions with computer assistants, as well as investigate the impressions and experiences of the comprehensibility of the computer agent's communication (including trust), Hanna and Richards (2019) applied Likert scaling to survey degrees of satisfaction with a virtual assistant's verbal conversation. They recruited 73 undergraduate students and tracked the behaviours of all participants, such as inputs and keystrokes.…”
