Speculative Data Work & Dashboards

Abstract: This paper studies data work in an organizational context, and suggests speculative data work as a useful concept and the speculative dashboard as a design concept, to better understand and support cooperative work. Drawing on fieldwork in a Danish public sector organisation, the paper identifies and conceptualizes the speculative data work performed around processes of digitalization and the push to become data-driven. The speculative dashboard is proposed as a design concept and opportunity for design, using… Show more

“…Similar to the notion of speculative design that Malpass [ 31 ] describes, our objective was not to design any specific technology but to understand how participants would shape a future where passive PGHD is used for clinical decision-making. We were also motivated by the idea of speculative data introduced by Hockenhull and Cohn [ 32 ] to uncover how data, specifically passive PGHD, may be produced, validated, and used by participants in the future. In this section, we detail our methodology, including the study procedures and methods for analysis.…”

“…In exploring the work carried out by financial professionals in imaginative intersections, I draw inspiration from conceptualisations of work that combine promissory and speculative elements, such as imagining the future, with daily tasks within organisational contexts (Pollock and Williams 2010) (Hockenhull and Cohn, 2021b). These influences inform a conceptualisation of work in the thesis combining imagination and daily tasks, centred on how imaginative activities are carried out in conduction with forms of planning and working out the details of FinTech products by financial professionals.…”
