FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) is a well accepted technique for head and neck lesions. It is a safe and inexpensive outdoor procedure. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a simple, quick and cost effective method and plays an important role in early diagnosis of superficial masses found in the head and neck region. It is to assess the frequency and incidence of different sites, age, sex and according to the lesions being inflammatory, benign and malignant. A retrospective study among 110 patients was conducted at GMERS Medical College and Hospital, Dharpur-Patan Gujarat from January 2021 to March 2023. Patients between the ages of 5 years to 75 years were taken into the study. Fine needle aspiration cytomorhological diagnosis was correlated with detailed clinical findings and investigations. Out of 110 fine needle aspiration procedures 67.28 % (74 cases) were of lymph node, 14.54% (16 cases) were of thyroid, 7.27% from salivary gland(08 cases) and 10.91% (12 cases) from miscellaneous swellings. Out of total 110 lesions, 60(54.54%) were inflammatory, 35 (31.82%) benign and 15 (13.65%) were malignant. From the present study we concluded that FNAC is excellent, fast, inexpensive and minimally invasive first line investigation for differential diagnosis of head and neck masses. Also combination of fine needle aspiration cytology with acid fast staining is very much helpful for routine diagnosis of tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND Neck swelling is a common presentation in the course of number of diseases. This condition is generally not a disease by itself, rather it may be a symptom of many possible underlying problems. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study includes 100 patients with neck swelling attending the Surgical Outpatient Department of Government Hospital, Guntur. Patient's data was recorded. Samples of FNAC were taken from the swelling and sent for cytology. Ultrasonography was performed for the neck swelling and results were interpreted in correlation with cytology. RESULTS Thyroid lesions accounted for the majority (57%) followed by lymph node enlargement (27%). Benign lesions were most common, of which thyroid goitres more common in female sex were found. The most common lymph nodal lesion is tuberculous/granulomatous lymphadenitis. In toto malignant lesions accounted for 23% of cases and their incidence rose sharply after 4th decade. The most common benign lesion was nodular goitre, inflammatory lesion was thyroiditis, most common malignant lesion was metastatic secondaries of neck and papillary carcinoma thyroid which was more common in young females. CONCLUSION The most common single pathological diagnosis in our study was found to be goitrous lesion of thyroid, most likely attributed to the endemicity of fluorosis in the catchment area of the hospital. High index of suspicion of malignancy needs to be borne in mind in dealing with a lymph node swelling in elderly.

BACKGROUND Neck swelling is a common presentation in the course of number of diseases. Since neck swelling is not a manifestation of a single disease, diagnosis becomes very difficult and it requires a strong knowledge about the differential diagnosis of neck swellings. The present study is undertaken with an aim of finding the common aetiologies of neck swellings in a surgical outpatient setting and also assess the usefulness of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) and ultrasonography in swellings of neck. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study includes 100 patients with neck swelling attending the surgical outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital. Inclusion criteria-Patients of age > 15 yrs. presenting with asymptomatic/ symptomatic neck swellings to the surgical outpatient department of a tertiary care Government General Hospital. Samples of FNAC were taken from the swelling and sent for cytology. Ultrasonography was performed for the neck swelling and the results were interpreted in correlation with cytology.
