Spectrum of ankylosing spondylitis in Portugal. Development of BASDAI, BASFI, BASMI and mSASSS reference centile charts

Abstract: The availability of population-specific normative data regarding disease severity measures is essential for patient assessment. The goals of the current study were to characterize the pattern of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in Portuguese patients and to develop reference centile charts for BASDAI, BASFI, BASMI and mSASSS, the most widely used assessment tools in AS. AS cases were recruited from hospital outpatient clinics, with AS defined according to the modified New York criteria. Demographic and clinical dat… Show more

“…When analyzing disease characteristics, the majority of patients exhibit low disease activity, low functional and low metrological repercussion. Most of our patients are HLA-B27 positive (80.8%), which is in line with the percentages already found for the Portuguese population ( Pimentel-Santos et al, 2012 ). Due to the small size of our study population and low number of female individuals, we did not take into account possible gender differences in any of our analysis.…”

“…SpA is typically characterized by inflammation of the spine and sacroiliac joints accompanied by pain, stiffness and in late stages, by reduced mobility. The disease may also affect the peripheral joints, periarticular structures (enthesitis, dactylitis), and extra-articular systems (acute anterior uveitis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel diseases) ( Pimentel-Santos et al, 2012 ; Stolwijk et al, 2016 ; Costantino et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a complex chronic disease where spinal inflammation typically causes lasting back pain with progressive loss of spinal mobility through sacroiliac and paraspinal calcification [1]. A significant number of patients also develop extra spinal complications affecting the eyes, peripheral joints, or intestines [2, 3]. The disease presents in the second or third decade of life and with no cure available.…”

“…Subjects were eligible to participate in the study if they: (1) were diagnosed with AS according to the modified New York criteria [10]; (2) were aged 18 years or older and [10]; (3) voluntarily consented to participate. The study excluded all patients presenting any other clinically diagnosed spondyloarthropathy, neurological or cardiorespiratory pathologies [10].…”

“…Their correlation with functional parameters has been more evident in the assessment of disease activity (BASDAI) [8]. However, to achieve a deeper and more specific understanding of the disease it is necessary to include functional (BASFI), metric (BASMI) and disease activity (BASDAI) parameters in the assessment of an individual with AS, as these are the preferred methods to evaluate individuals with AS [2,6,10,11].…”
