Spectrum and mortality of opportunistic infections among HIV/AIDS patients in southwestern China

Abstract: We describe the opportunistic infections (OIs) of HIV/AIDS to understand the spectrum, mortality, and frequency of multiple coinfected OIs among HIV/AIDS patients in southern China, where OIs are severe. We carried out a retrospective cohort study of hospitalized HIV-infected individuals at the Fourth People’s Hospital of Nanning, Guangxi, China, from Jan. 2011 to May. 2019. The chi-square test was used to analyze cross-infection; the Kaplan‒Meier analysis was used to compare mortality. A total of 12,612 HIV-i… Show more

“…Our analysis shows that WLHIV with CD4 count <500/mm 3 had a two-fold higher risk of developing OIs which is consistent with previous studies [ 8–10 , 17 , 18 , 25 , 26 ]. Similarly, a higher risk of OIs among those with VL > 1000 copies/ml [ 17 , 25 , 27 ].…”

“…People with chronic HIV infection may be vulnerable to opportunistic infections due to reduced immunity. These infections have a negative impact on the health and quality of life of people living with HIV, increasing morbidity and mortality (9,10) . During pregnancy, women with HIV may be more susceptible to STIs due to anatomical, immunological, and behavioral factors (11,12) .…”

“…Guangxi, China has a high HIV/AIDS burden and the third highest cumulative cases count. Hospitalized HIVinfected individuals have a high T. marneffei infection rate (up to 16.1%), and a higher mortality rate than most common HIV-related complications (AHR = 4.52) [8][9][10]. T. marneffei infection often causes delayed or incorrect diagnosis due to non-specific symptoms, allowing for disease progression in these individuals.…”
