Spectrum and Antifungal Resistance of Candidemia in Neonates With Early- and Late-Onset Sepsis in Pakistan

Abstract: Background: Neonatal candidemia leads to high morbidity and mortality in developing countries. We studied the trends, spectrum and antifungal resistance in neonatal candidemia isolates from the year 2014 to 2019. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at the Aga Khan University, Pakistan. Neonates with positive blood cultures with Candida species were retrospectively identified from the laboratory database (2014)(2015)(2016)(2017)(2018) and prospectively in 2019 where clinical information was also… Show more

“…15 C. parapsilosis species complex is the third most common agent of candidemia in adults and neonates population in Pakistan. 16,17 The first antifungal resistance epidemiological study from Pakistan (2006Pakistan ( -2009 in invasive candidiasis did not report fluconazole resistance in C. parapsilosis species complex supporting the use of fluconazole as a treatment option. 18 However, a follow-up study from the same centre conducted in 2010-2014 detected the emergence of fluconazole resistance in C. parapsilosis species complex.…”
