Coupled-channel three-body calculations of an I = 1/2, J π = 0 − KN N quasi-bound state in the KN N − πΣN system were performed and the dependence of the resulting three-body energy on the two-body KN − πΣ interaction was investigated. Earlier results of binding energy50 − 70 MeV and width Γ K − pp ∼ 100 MeV are confirmed [N.V. Shevchenko et al., Phys.Rev. Lett. 98, 082301 (2007)]. It is shown that a suitably constructed energy-independent complex KN potential gives a considerably shallower and narrower three-body quasi-bound state than the full coupled-channel calculation. Comparison with other calculations is made.

Model-independent determination of the parity of $Ξ$ hyperons

Based on reflection symmetry in the reaction plane, it is shown that measuring the transverse spintransfer coefficient Kyy in the KN → KΞ reaction directly determines the parity of the produced cascade hyperon in a model-independent way as π Ξ = Kyy, where π Ξ = ±1 is the parity. This result based on Bohr's theorem provides a completely general, universal relationship that applies to the entire hyperon spectrum. A similar expression is obtained for the photoreaction γN → KKΞ by measuring both the double-polarization observable Kyy and the photon-beam asymmetry Σ. Regarding the feasibility of such experiments, it is pointed out that the self-analyzing property of the Ξ's can be invoked, thus requiring only a polarized nucleon target.

To understand the structure of hadrons and their production mechanisms, it is very important to be able to identify their quantum numbers. For investigating the spin and parity quantum numbers of Ξ and Ω baryons, in particular, it is very important to understand strong interactions in the strangeness sector. At present, such quantum numbers are known for only a few of the Ξ baryons, and even the parity of the ground state Ξ(1318) has never been measured. In this article, we present a novel, model-independent way to determine the parity of Ξ baryons solely based on symmetry considerations for the hadronic reactionKN → KΞ. IntroductionRegarding the production of strange baryons, the existing extensive studies on the production of Λ and Σ hyperons, which have strangeness S = −1, have accumulated many data for various physical quantities that are relevant for describing the production mechanisms of S = −1 baryons and the parameters of nucleon resonances. By contrast, the production of multi-strangeness Ξ (S = −2) and Ω (S = −3) baryons has not been studied very often. One reason is that the processes for producing multi-strangeness baryons from non-strangeness initial states have very small cross sections. As a result, no significant information on multi-strangeness baryons has been added during the past two decades [1].Recently, however, the interest in multi-strangeness physics is increasing.
