Spectroscopy and photometry of ShCG 191 - Abell 1097

Abstract: Abstract. In the course of investigation of Shakhbazian compact groups we studied the group ShCG 191 which has been identified also as the Abell cluster A1097. By its richness it may be classified as a rich compact group or a poor cluster. We determined redshifts of 14 objects in the area of the cluster and found that two of the supposed members of the group are stars. Redshifts of 12 galaxies show that the system is gravitationally bound. The V and R magnitudes of 23 member galaxies and their morphological ty… Show more

“…Most Hickson Compact Groups (HCGs) are dynamically associated with larger loose groups (Tovmassian et al 2001). This may explain the observed longevity of these systems when compared with N-body simulations which show an isolated compact group evolving into a single merger remnant in only a few orbital times (Barnes 1989).…”

“…Spectral and photographic observations of a large number of ShCG groups have been made by Tiersch et al [14 and references therein] and Tovmassian et al [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23]. It was shown that the majority of the candidate group members were galaxies with accordant radial velocities (usually < 1000 km s -1 ).…”

“…Furthermore, even though some contamination by stars is indeed present, many of the objects initially suspected to be stars were found to be galaxies. The extensive and detailed studies by Tiersch, (Tiersch 1976; Tiersch et al 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996a, 1996a,b, 2002), Tovmassian (Tovmassian et al 1998, 1999a,b; Tovmassian & Tiersch 2001; Tovmassian et al 2003a,b, 2004, 2005a,b,c, 2006, 2007) and collaborators of a subset of 44 groups have shown that SHK groups form a rather intriguing class of physically bound and moderately compact structures. The spatial densities of SHK groups found in these works, span a wide range: from slightly higher than those of loose groups (10–10 2 gal Mpc −3 ) up to values comparable to the cores of rich clusters or HCGs (10 4 – 10 5 gal Mpc −3 ) for m ≲ 19 mag.…”
