Spectroscopy and photokinetics of chromium (III) in glass

Abstract: The optical absorption, emission, emission lifetime, and absolute quantum efficiency have been measured for chromium (III) in a wide variety of oxide and fluoride glasses. In all cases, the room temperature emission is dominated by inhomogeneously broadened 4T2 fluorescence, and the relaxation of this level is shown to be primarily nonradiative. Multiphonon emission to lattice modes, concentration quenching, and quenching by hydroxyl moieties is shown not to be of significance in this relaxation at low doping … Show more

“…This expression gives values at RT of about 0.11 and 0.06 for the TaCr1 and TaCr2 glasses, respectively, close to the values obtained by Andrews et al [10] for other Tellurites. The efficiency is higher in the glass with less content in Ta 2 O 5 .…”

“…In all cases, non-exponential decays have been obtained, as expected for Cr 3+ ions in glasses. Although the decay curves can be fitted to a double exponential function, for practical purposes and in order to compare with other glasses in the literature, it is useful to define an average lifetime τ [10]. Fig.…”

“…However, here in this case, only two bands are recorded for first two transitions. In the profile of 4 A 2g (F) 4 T 2g (F), the spectrum of Cr 3+ doped glass will exhibit two dips [37]. These dips are resulted due to Fano anti-resonances from the interaction of the 2 T 1g (G) and 2 E g (G) with vibrationally broadened 4 T 2g (F) state [38].…”

“…Our results suggest also that the efficiency of broad-band emission from ions in glasses cannot be expected to have a high quantum efficiency, because the off-set of the excited state parabola in a glass is relatively large. In fact, this low quantum efficiency is what has been observed for Cr 3+ [19] and UO 2+ [20] in glasses.…”
