The emission spectra of C 2 (d 3 Π g -a 3 Π u ), CH(A 2 Δ-X 2 Π), and CH(B 2 Σ-X 2 Π) bands are analysed to measure rotational T rot , vibrational T vib , and gas temperature T g from Ar/C 2 H 2 (5-20% C 2 H 2 ) microwave-induced plasma (MIP). In case when helium and hydrogen are used in the gas mixture instead of argon, no significant change in T rot is noticed. Both studied temperatures are insensitive in terms of the C 2 H 2 percentage. From CH(0-0, A 2 Δ-X 2 Π) band R 2 branch lines, two T rot (T rot ∼ 520-580 K for J ′ = 3-9 and T rot ∼ 1,700-1,800 K for J ′ = 10-17) are determined. The lower T rot equals the T g (500-700 K) measured from C 2 bands in this study. The H 2 Fulcherdiagonal bands are recorded as well in the H 2 /C 2 H 2 mixtures and T rot ∼750-900 K of the H 2 ground state measured. T vib ∼ 6,000 K in Ar/C 2 H 2 MIP is calculated from the integral intensity ratio of C 2 (2,1) and C 2 (3,2) bands. Phys. 97, 033302 (2005); 10.1063/1.1846139Comparison of excessive Balmer α line broadening of glow discharge and microwave hydrogen plasmas with certain catalystsAbstract. An overview of the recent studies of Balmer line shapes in a hollow cathode glow discharges operated with hydrogen isotopes, water vapour, methane and their mixtures with argon and other inert gases is presented. The multi-component Gaussian structure of experimental lineshape is discussed in detail. The narrowest and medium width Gaussian are related to dissociative excitation and dissociative ionization and excitation of hydrogen containing molecules, respectively. The largest width Gaussian is related to excessive Doppler broadening well described by so called "collision model". This model is used to explain differences in half widths of excessively broadened part of line profile for various hollow cathode voltages, cathode materials and cathode temperature effect..

The spatial inhomogeneity of pulsed atmospheric pressure discharge in argon is investigated using the electron number density Ne diagnostics procedure applied to asymmetrically broadened Ar I lines. A dedicated fitting procedure is used for describing Ar I 703.0 nm line shape recorded from argon gas discharge and H I (at 486.13 and 656.28 nm) lines recorded from Ar‐H2 gas mixture discharge. The results revealed the change in Ne in both axial and radial directions. The additional Ar I lines at 614.5, 710.7, 731.2, and 731.6 nm, recorded from integral spatial radiation, are analysed as well to confirm the results from the plasma column region. The possibility of using AlO (B2∑+–X2∑+) and CN (B2∑+–X2∑+) molecular bands for gas temperature Tg measurements in this type of gas discharge source is demonstrated and Tg used as an input parameter for the Ne diagnostics procedure. For the proper identification of molecular band spectral lines, the Fortrat parabolas are constructed. The results obtained from Ar I 703.0 nm line indicate three different Ne values, with Ne1 ≈ 0.6 × 1016 cm−3, Ne2 ≈ 3.6 × 1016 cm−3, and Ne3 ≈ 19 × 1016 cm−3 measured from the plasma column. These Ne values increase in the cathode and anode region.
