Spectroscopic Studies of the Modification of Crystalline Si(111) Surfaces with Covalently-Attached Alkyl Chains Using a Chlorination/Alkylation Method

Abstract: A two-step procedure, involving radical-initiated chlorination of the Si surface with PCl 5 followed by reaction of the chlorinated surface with alkyl-Grignard or alkyl-lithium reagents, has been developed to functionalize crystalline (111)-oriented H-terminated Si surfaces. The surface chemistry that accompanies these reaction steps has been investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), temperature programmed desorption spectroscopy (TPDS), high-resolution elect… Show more

“…This peak was assigned as the C-H symmetric bending, or "umbrella", mode of the methyl group. 22,27 This mode is expected to be normal to the surface if CH 3 replaces Cl on Si(111) as shown in Chart 1.…”

“…3 A few grains of benzoyl peroxide were added as a radical initiator, and the reaction solution was heated at 95°C for 45 min. The sample was then removed from the reaction solution, rinsed with tetrahydrofuran (THF) and CH 3 OH, and then finally rinsed again with THF, which was allowed to evaporate off the wafer.…”

“…3 Extensive work in our laboratory has focused on the use of a two-step chlorination/alkylation procedure to produce well-defined, alkylated Si surfaces. 4,5 Such surfaces have been shown to exhibit very low surface recombination velocities, indicating relatively few electrically active defect sites on the functionalized surface. 1,5 Consistently, no silicon oxides are detectable by surface-sensitive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on such initially prepared alkylated Si surfaces.…”

“…The disappearance of the Si-H stretch mode (2082 cm -1 ) upon chlorination was expected. 20 The most striking feature is the appearance of a unique azide symmetric stretching mode at 2168 cm -1 , which is blue-shifted by ca. 122 and 63 cm -1 with respect to either azides in solution (see SI) or organic azides 18,21 with nitrogen bonded to a carbon atom, respectively.…”
