“…[4] In fact, it was not until 2014 that the first laser action of Yb ion in orthophosphates was demonstrated with a Yb:LuPO 4 crystal plate. [5] Since then, progress has been made in growing miniature columnar crystals of Yb:LuPO 4 , as well as in studies of its continuous-wave (CW) and Q-switched laser performance. [6][7][8][9] Given the isomorphic crystal structures of LuPO 4 and LuVO 4 and the identical lattice site having a local symmetry of point group D 2d at which the Yb ion enters, it will be interesting and instructive to compare the lasing properties of Yb ion in these two host crystals in order to clarify how and to what extent the host crystal structure and ligand field (crystal field) can determine the basic lasing properties of an active ion.…”

“…Recently, we have grown single crystals of Yb:LuPO 4 employing high-temperature solution method, with largest dimensions amounting to 6 mm × 2 mm × 0.5 mm [6]. With these thin crystal plates, continuous-wave (CW) laser action was realized, generating an output power of 1.6 W [7]. Apart from such thin-plate shaped crystals, columnar crystals of Yb:LuPO 4 were also developed, from which miniature crystal rods could be prepared, and CW laser operation was realized with Yb:LuPO 4 miniature rod, showing a potential of generating 5-10 W of output power [8].…”
