Spectroscopic identification of alizarin in a mixture of organic red dyes by incorporation in Zr‐Ormosil

Abstract: Raman and UV-visible spectroscopy were applied to the study of a mixture of alizarin and carminic acid, two highly fluorescent anthraquinone dyes. The selective incorporation of alizarin into a Zr-Ormosil polymer induced intense Raman spectra that allow an easy, quick and unequivocal identification of this dye. Therefore, this method can be applied to the separation and identification of dyes, which is an important issue in the field of archaeometry. Raman spectroscopy was used to identify alizarin in Zr-Ormos… Show more

“…[31] The spectral modifications observed for the lake are most likely related to the interaction of the dye with the inorganic mordant. This hypothesis is sustained by SERS data of alizarin, [32] in which the enhanced Raman spectrum of the complexed dye on the metal nanoparticle surface is similar to that reported in the present work for madder lake.…”

“…c Refs. [11,31,32]. modification observed passing from the anthraquinone dyes, alizarin and purpurin, to madder lake, the lac lake Raman features show an intense band at 1310 cm −1 that could be assigned to CC stretching modes of the Al-dye complex.…”

“…The SERS peaks of alizarin are in excellent agreement with previous reports and theoretical calculations. 25 Although the SERS features are not as well defined for carminic acid or lac dye, this is the first report of the SERS spectrum for either dye to the best of our knowledge. Further optimization study is underway to improve the quality of their spectra and elucidate the origin of these SERS bands.…”
