Spectroscopic detection of COClF in the tropical and mid-latitude lower stratosphere

Abstract: We report retrievals of COClF (carbonyl chlorofluoride) based on atmospheric chemistry experiment (ACE) solar occultation spectra recorded at tropical and mid-latitudes during [2004][2005]. The COClF molecule is a temporary reservoir of both chlorine and fluorine and has not been measured previously by remote sensing. A maximum COClF mixing ratio of 99:7 AE 48:0 pptv (10 À12 per unit volume, 1 sigma) is measured at 28 km for tropical and subtropical occultations (latitudes below 20 in both hemispheres) with lo… Show more

“…COClF results from the breakdown of CCl 3 F, so it has a peak in the lower to middle stratosphere [ Kaye et al , 1991]. Retrievals of COClF involving averaged ACE‐FTS spectra were carried out by Rinsland et al [2006]; however, a routine operational retrieval has not been developed at the time of this writing. The tropical and midlatitude COClF profiles in this work were based on the Rinsland et al [2006] retrieval using ACE‐FTS measurements.…”

“…( Kellmann et al, 2012). Also COClF was measured by ACE-FTS (Rinsland et al, 2007;Fu et al, 2009). The detection of COCl 2 was particularly important since its band is situated at the same spectral position as the v 4 band of CFC-11, and not treating COCl 2 correctly in the retrieval will trigger errors in CFC-11.…”

“…7). Satellite data are well suited for this exercise (Rinsland et al, 2007;Fu et al, 2009) as water vapor interferences make the detection of COClF from FTIR ground-based spectra difficult. Only ACE-FTS occultations located in the 40-50 • N latitude band have been compared with KASIMA data, which represents a set of 64 coincident points.…”
