Abstract. The oceanic phosphorus cycle describes how phosphorus moves through the ocean, accumulates with the sediments on the seafloor, and participates in biogeochemical reactions. We propose a new two-reservoir scenario of the glacial-interglacial phosphorus cycle. It relies on diagenesis in methane hydrate-bearing sediments to mobilize sedimentary phosphorus and transfer it to the oceanic reservoir during times when falling sea level lowers the hydrostatic pressure on the seafloor and destabilizes methane hydrates. The stock of solid phase phosphorus mobilizable by this process is of the same order of magnitude as the dissolved phosphate inventory of the current oceanic reservoir. The potential, additional flux of phosphate during the glacial period is of the same order of magnitude as pre-agricultural, riverine dissolved phosphate fluxes to the ocean. Throughout the cycle, primary production assimilates phosphorus and inorganic carbon into biomass which, upon settling and burial, returns phosphorus to the sedimentary reservoir. Primary production also lowers the partial pressure of CO2 in the surface ocean, potentially drawing down CO2 from the atmosphere. Concurrent with this slow ‘biological pump’, but operating in the opposite direction, a ’physical pump’ brings metabolic CO2-enriched waters from deep-ocean basins to the upper ocean. The two pumps compete, but the direction of the CO2 flux at the air-sea interface depends on the nutrient content of the deep waters. Because of the transfer of reactive phosphorus to the sedimentary reservoir throughout a glaciation cycle, low phosphorus/ high CO2 deep waters reign at the beginning of a deglaciation, resulting in rapid transfer of CO2 to the atmosphere. The new scenario provides another element to the suite of processes that may have contributed to the rapid glacial-interglacial climate transitions documented in paleo-records.

Phosphorus Dynamics Associated With Organic Carbon Mineralization by Reduction of Sulfate and Iron in Sediment Exposed to Fish Farming

The expansion of the aquaculture industry has resulted in accumulation of phosphorus (P)-rich organic matter via uneaten fish feed. To elucidate the impact of fish farming on P dynamics, P speciation, and benthic P release along with partitioning of organic carbon (Corg) mineralization coupled to sulfate reduction (SR) and iron reduction (FeR) were investigated in the sediments from Jinju Bay, off the southern coast of South Korea, in July 2013. SR in the farm sediment was 6.9-fold higher than the control sediment, and depth-integrated (0–10 cm) concentrations of NH4+, PO43–, and H2S in pore water of the farm sediment were 2.2-, 3.3-, and 7.4-fold higher than that in control sediment, respectively. High biogenic-P that comprised 28% of total P directly reflected the impact of P-rich fish feed, which ultimately enhanced the bioavailability (58% of total P) of P in the surface sediment of the farm site. In the farm sediment where SR dominated Corg mineralization, H2S oxidation coupled to the reduction of FeOOH stimulated release of P bound to iron oxide, which resulted in high regeneration efficiency (85%) of P in farm sediments. Enhanced P desorption from FeOOH was responsible for the increase in authigenic-P and benthic P flux. Authigenic-P comprised 33% of total P, and benthic P flux to the overlying water column accounted for approximately 800% of the P required for primary production. Consequently, excessive benthic P release resulting directly from oversupply of P-rich fish feed was a significant internal source of P for the water column, and may induce undesirable eutrophication and harmful algal blooms in shallow coastal ecosystems.

Concentration gradients in the solid fraction and pore water of modern sediments allow to identify benthic biogeochemical processes and the associated fluxes. Gradients are often obtained from layers sampled below the sediment–water interface from sediment cores. Numerous examples in the literature show results from cores collected in impermeable porous sediments, but very few from permeable sediment cores. Indeed, the acquisition of vertical profiles in sandy permeable sediments with a spatiotemporal resolution equivalent to that of muddy sediments is a challenge. We present here a simple protocol that allows sampling of sandy sediments and their interstitial waters with a vertical resolution of 1 cm. This method is suitable for shallow environments, such as intertidal zones, lakes, lagoons, and stream beds. The method is based on rapid conditioning of hand‐collected cores. The cores are pre‐cut lengthwise. Immediately after recovery, they are laid horizontally, opened, and sliced. Interstitial water is collected by centrifugation on site shortly after cutting the core with tubes equipped with a 0.2 μm membrane. Optimally, 30 min is sufficient between core collection and conditioning of 12 sections of a 20‐cm long core. The examples shown indicate that the method is reproducible. Reduced dissolved compounds such as Fe(II), Mn(II), and NH4+ show profiles without significant oxidation. At the time of core cutting, small volumes of pore water are seeping out of the core, but for sediments with a permeability of up to 10−10 m2, this seepage does not disturb the shape of the pore‐water profiles.
