Spectrophotometric Determination of Cobalt(II) Using the Chromogenic Reagent 4,4′-Diazobenzenediazoaminoazobenzene in a Micellar Surfactant Medium

Abstract: A highly sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of cobalt(ii) using the chromogenic reagent 4,4A-diazobenzenediazoaaminoazobenzene (BBDAB) was developed. The optimum conditions for the chromogenic reaction of cobalt(ii) with BBDAB were studied in the presence of Triton X-100 and sodium tetraborate. The calibration graphs were rectilinear in the range 0-7 mg per 25 cm 3 cobalt(ii). The apparent molar absorptivity is 1.72 3 10 5 dm 3 mol 21 cm 21 with a Sandell's sensitivity of 0.00035 mg cm 2… Show more

“…16 The China National Environmental Monitoring Centre reported cobalt levels of 15 µg/g and 26 µg/g. 24 In plants cobalt is required by the urease enzyme. Cobalt has only a low affinity to humic substances, 12 and it is adsorbed to clay minerals in soil and geological origin by specific reactions.…”

“…The selection of the number of the factors in the PLS algorithm is very important to achieve the best prediction. The number of factors was estimated in the PLS1 by cross-section validation method, leaving out one sample at a time and plotting the prediction residual error sum of squares (PRESS) versus the number of factors for each individual component [20,21]. PRESS was computed using following equation:…”

“…Micellar systems are convenient to use because they are optically transparent, readily available and stable 11 . In the field of metal ion complexation, micelles form a ternary complex at concentrations below or above the critical micelles concentration (CMC) which has advantageous properties, such as hyperchromic and bathochromic displacements, so that sensitivity of the method can be modified by affecting the interferences of matrix 12 . Micellar system has an important ability to solubilize slightly insoluble or even very insoluble complexes and/or ligands which introduces it as a typical manner [13][14][15] .…”
