Spectrophotometric Determination of Cationic Surfactants Based on Their Effect on the Complexes of Chrome Azurol S with Be2+ and Al3+ Cations

Abstract: Simple, rapid, and sensitive spectrophotometric methods have been proposed for the determination of cationic surfactants (CS) as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), dodecyltrimethylammonium (DTAB), and cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB). The methods are based on the effects of CSs on the complexes of Al 3þ and Be 2þ withChrome Azurol S (CAS). The optimum reaction conditions such as CAS concentration, metal ion concentration, and pH have been studied and found to be 2.0 Â 10Be 2þ and pH 5.4. The analytical charac… Show more

“…Triton X-100 (TX-100) is a nonionic surfactant which has a hydrophilic head on one side and a hydrophobic tail on another side [ 21 ]. They are extensively used as preservatives or antiseptic agents in industrial and commercial products [ 22 ]. The micro heterogeneous environment of SDS contains a negatively charged surface and a hydrophobic interior [ 23 ].…”

“…A portion of the solution was transferred into a 1.0 cm quartz cell to measure the absorbance at the wavelength of 612 nm against a blank solution that was also prepared using the same method. In the adsorption study, 1 g of silica particles was immersed in the CTAB solution, ranging from 0.10 to 10 mg/ml at ambient temperature for 1 h. Initial and residual concentrations of CTAB in the adsorption study were determined using the same method that was used for calibration curve preparation (Afkhami et al 2010).…”

“…Additionally some cationic surfactants were employed as corrosion inhibitor, antibacterial, anti-fungal and antiviral agent. [5,6] Up to now, several techniques such as chromatography, [7][8][9] capillary electrophoresis, [10,11] spectrophotometry, [12][13][14] spectrofluorimetry, [15] mass spectrometry, [16][17][18] photometric titration [19] and electrochemical [20] have been introduced for the determination of various cationic surfactants. Most of the mentioned methods are time consuming and required the employment of environmentally hazardous solvents, laborious pretreatment steps, sophisticated instruments, expert operators and expensive consumables.…”
