Spectrophotometric Determination of Ascorbic Acid in Aqueous Solutions

Abstract: Anew spectrophotometeric method for determination of ascorbic acid(A.A) in aqueous solutions depending on its ability to reduce the colors of permanganate at (530nm) and dichromate at (350 nm). The optimum conditions such as best concentration of reactant and order of addition were studied to get the highest sensitivity (ε=2355.70 and 3094.75) L.mol -1 .cm -1 with wide range of calibration curves (1-16) and (2-90) ppm good repeatability (RSD% 0.73 and 1.49), the recovery %(100.20 and 99.42), E rel % (-0.20 and… Show more

“…To study the merging zone in the determination of ascorbic acid during flow injection analysis, it is important to evaluate the concentration of ascorbic acid using more than three solutions and spectrophotometry. A range of studies (Fadhel 2012;Revanasiddappa and Veena 2008;Janićijević 2012;Permanganate 2018b;Al-anbakey 2018;Silver et al 1986;Desai 2019;Sultan and Hassan 2009) related to the determinations of ascorbic acid used spectrophotometer as a detector. These studies report that the first step is based on the oxidation of ascorbic acid into dehydroascorbic acid using different materials.…”

“…These studies report that the first step is based on the oxidation of ascorbic acid into dehydroascorbic acid using different materials. For example, bromine water (Janićijević 2012;Desai 2019), potassium permanganate (Sultan and Hassan 2009;Permanganate 2018b;Fadhel 2012), dichromate (Fadhel 2012) (Revanasiddappa and Veena 2008), Se(IV) in an acid medium (HCl 2M/1ml) (Revanasiddappa and Veena 2008), and mixing of [FeNH4(SO4)2. 12H2O]and K3Fe(CN)6 around 2.5ml (100 μg/mL) and 3ml(100 μg/mL), respectively, in an acid solution of HCl-pH=4 (Al-anbakey 2018), and by mixing FeCl3 with methanol and low acid HCl (Silver et al 1986).…”

“…Present-day, different techniques of analysis are applied to estimate the vitamin C content in both the fresh fruit and fruit-based beverages commercially. Ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy [3][4][5], High-performance liquid chromatography [6][7][8][9][10], capillary zone electrophoresis [11], voltammetry [12], etc. were proposed to determine vitamin C in the juices and related products.…”

“…Several methods have been developed and utilized to quantify ascorbic acid. Among them is the classic method known as volumetric method which required titration of an oxidant solution to ascorbic acid [15]. There are a variety of oxidant solution such as potassium iodate [16] and bromate [17].…”
