Aim:The aim of this study was to compare the translucency parameter (TP) of ultratranslucent multilayered (UTML) zirconia according to thickness and layer level. Materials and methods:Rectangles of UTML zirconia with four layers [dentin layer (DEL), first transitional layer (FTL), second transitional layer (STL), and enamel layer (ENL)] and four different thicknesses (0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1 mm) were milled from blanks. Digital images were taken in a dark studio against white and black backgrounds under simulated daylight illumination and international commission on illumination (CIE) Lab* color values recorded using Photoshop Creative Cloud software. The TP was computed and compared according to thickness and layer level using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Bonferroni post hoc analysis for multiple comparisons. Significance was set at p < 0.05. Results:In each thickness, TP values were similar between any two layers. The significant effect of thickness on the TP was observed only in the first two layers. In the DEL, translucency was significantly greater at 0.4 mm than all other thicknesses. In the FTL, differences were significant between 0.4 and 0.8 mm and between 0.4 and 1 mm. Conclusion:The investigated zirconia does not seem to show gradational changes in relative translucency from dentin to enamel levels regardless of the thickness used. Thickness affected the TP only in the first two layers with better translucency at 0.4 mm.Clinical significance: Since relative translucency does not seem to be significantly different between layers, clinicians can modify the apicocoronal positioning of the UTML layers within the restoration according to the desired Chroma without any implications on the clinically perceived translucency. While the thickness of 0.4 mm may be suggested for anterior esthetic veneers because of its higher translucency, the other thicknesses of 0.6 to 1 mm can be used to mask colored abutments in full contour restorations.

Sažetak. Izbjeljivanje zuba je aktualni estetski trend kojim se posvijetljuje postojeća boja zuba. Postoje razne tehnike izbjeljivanja, od onih u ordinaciji do onih koje se provode kod kuće. S obzirom na podrijetlo diskoloracija, stanje usne šupljine, indikacije i kontraindikacije, doktor dentalne medicine u dogovoru s pacijentom odabire najprikladniju tehniku izbjeljivanja. "Take-home" je učinkovita i jednostavna tehnika izbjeljivanja pomoću udlage, koja se provodi kod kuće uz nadzor doktora dentalne medicine. Prije izbjeljivanja potrebno je sanirati usnu šupljinu te provesti profesionalno čišćenje mekih i tvrdih zubnih naslaga strojnim i ručnim instrumentima. Boju ispuna moguće je prilagoditi nakon izbjeljivanja izradom novog ispuna odgovarajuće boje. Izbjeljivanje se ne preporučuje pacijentima s parodontnom bolesti. Najčešće korišteni materijal je 10 -16 %-tni karbamid-peroksid. Njegova se koncentracija može postupno i povećavati kako bi se izbjegle nuspojave, među kojima su najčešće preosjetljivost zuba i iritacija gingive. Postupak izbjeljivanja obično traje 10 -14 dana po čeljusti. Cilj ovog članka je predstaviti u današnje vrijeme vrlo popularnu tehniku izbjeljivanja "take-home", kao jedan od mogućih načina izbjeljivanja zuba.Ključne riječi: izbjeljivanje zuba; preosjetljivost; sredstva za izbjeljivanje zuba; udlaga Abstract. Tooth bleaching is a current aesthetic trend which lightens the basic colour of the teeth. There are various bleaching techniques ranging from those performed in the dental office to those performed at home. Regarding the origin of discolorations, oral cavity condition, indications and contraindications, the doctor of dental medicine chooses in collaboration with the patient the most appropriate whitening technique. "Take-home" is an effective and simple bleaching technique performed by patients at home using trays, supervised by the dentist. Before the bleaching process, it is necessary to resolve the oral cavity health issues and perform the professional cleaning of soft and hard tooth deposits using power-driven and hand instruments. After bleaching old fillings may be replaced with new ones of the matching colour. Bleaching is not recommended for patients with periodontal disease. The most commonly used material is 10 -16 % carbamide-peroxide. Its concentration may be gradually increased thus avoiding the side effects such as tooth sensitivity and gingival irritation. The bleaching procedure usually lasts 10 to 14 days per jaw. The aim of this article is to present a currently very popular "take-home" bleaching technique as one of several possible options of tooth bleaching. BackgroundThis study aims to develop a protocol that optimizes in vitro dental bleaching procedures in a cheap, fast and accessible manner.Material and Methods18 bovine incisors were cut and polished in enamel/dentin and submitted to staining in coffee solution during 72 hours. After the standardization and staining of the enamel surfaces, three groups (n = 6) were formed to receive three different gels, WHITENESS (commercial gel); H2O2 - 5% (manipulated gel); CARBOPOL GEL (manipulated gel and without H2O2). The color of the enamel surfaces was evaluated using digital images, obtained with digital camera and controlled luminosity, before and after staining, as well as after each bleaching step.ResultsThe average bleaching after 48 hours of procedure was: WHITENESS with 13.6 (± 1.2); H2O2 (5%) with 9.8 (± 1.4) and CARBOPOL GEL with 2.9 (± 0.6). After 72 hours, WHITENESS presented a mean of 15.8 (± 0.7), the H2O2 group (5%) 14.4 (± 1.5) and CARBOPOL GEL 4.6 (± 1.0). After completing 96 hours of whitening, WHITENESS presented an average of 18.3 (± 0.8), H2O2 (5%) 16.7 (± 1.4) and CARBOPOL GEL 7.3 (± 0.8). Our data demonstrated that the protocol development for us can be used to evaluate dental bleaching in a short time, with 96 hours already was possible to detect significant differences, when compared with the longer times of experimental dental bleaching.ConclusionsThe proposed protocol guarantees statistically significant results in 96 hours, confirming the efficacy, cheapness, viability and practicality of the protocol developed in this study.
