Spectral shaping of a 10W diode laser-Yb-fiber amplifier system

Abstract: We describe a continuous-wave master-oscillator power-amplifier system based on a distributed Bragg reflection diode laser and an Yb doped fiber amplifier. The observed optical spectrum of the amplified seed source can be tailored to arbitrary shapes and widths between 30 MHz and greater than 1 GHz by controlling the radio frequency modulation wave form of the injection current.

“…1(a) shows the optical-to-optical power conversion efficiency of the ASE amplifier. The slope efficiency of the ASE amplifier was found to be 33% while the peak efficiency was 31%, which is comparable to other fiber amplifier systems [10].…”

“…The OPO is pumped by a home-built amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source that consists of a matched pair of Ytterbium-doped double clad polarization maintaining fibers, similar to the master-oscillator power amplifier systems that we have described elsewhere [9,10]. Using two fibers with identical physical properties (Nufern PLMA-YDF-20/400 6.5 m length, 20 µm core diameter) for both seeding and amplifying ensures that the seed spectrum optimally matches the amplifier spectrum.…”

“…At high power levels, more complex laser geometries have to be applied to correct for thermally induced distortions (these distortions reduce the efficiency of the laser). In recent years, fiber based MOPA systems incorporating a Q-switched Nd:YAG thin-disk laser as a seed source and rare-earth doped fiber appear particularly attractive providing greater flexibility in terms of the critical pulse parameters, such as high average power, high pulse energy and high peak-power [1][2][3][4][5][6], but they were not all-fiber configuration. A directly-pulse-driven semiconductor diode laser with pigtailed fiber was used as seed source, and Yb-doped full-fiber MOPA system was realized [3].…”
