Spectral sensitivity in the photodegradation of fir wood (Abies alba Mill.) surfaces: colour changes in natural weathering

Abstract: Activation spectra of wood under natural irradiation were investigated in detail in this work. The main purpose was to study colour changes on the wood surface over time and into the depth during natural light exposure and thus to further contribute to the optimization of surface-protecting treatments. In a natural weathering test, three 80-lm-thick strips of fir wood forming the surface layer of a wood composite were exposed to light under a series of glass cut-off filters. Samples were withdrawn at intervals… Show more

“…Colour changes of wood samples Concerning the L*a*b* changes as a function of irradiation time, lightness (L*) clearly decreases in normal wood varying from 82.06 to 68.99 after 504 h of exposure as also observed for other species (Lo Monaco et al 2011b;Pelosi et al 2013;Calienno et al 2014;Deka et al 2008;Esteves et al 2008;Ferreira et al 2012;Oltean et al 2008;Sharratt et al 2009;Ž ivković et al 2014). The rapid decrease in lightness observed for the normal wood within the first 48 h of exposure can be ascribed to photodegradation processes.…”

“…The colour change caused by the sunshine and the rain for natural wood is a well investigated phenomenon [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. But the colour change caused by the photodegradation for thermally treated wood is not well researched, and the published results are sometimes contradictory.…”

“…The main degradative factors are sunshine and rain. This phenomenon of photodegradation has been well studied for natural wood (Pandey 2005;Sharratt et al 2009;Chang et al 2010;Popescu et al 2011;Persze and Tolvaj 2012;Agresti et al 2013;Denes and Lang 2013;Teaca et al 2013;Zivkovic et al 2013).…”
