Spectral irradiance effects on the outdoor performance of photovoltaic modules

Abstract: The outdoor performance of photovoltaic modules is influenced by spectrum. Even if the irradiance level and the operating temperature is the same, performance difference of photovoltaic modules between the seasons can be increase up to 15% depending on the photovoltaic module type. In this paper, seasonal spectral irradiance effects on the outdoor photovoltaic module performance and previous studies has been summarised thoroughly. The spectrum indicators which are used for spectra characteristics, Useful Fract… Show more

“…So calculating the PV performance one of the methods is using the annual real output values of the PV system. Materials used in solar cells are very important in converting the solar irradiance to electricity and materials spectral response due to wavelength is very important at this point [1]. There are several PV systems installed in Muğla province (exceeding 20MWp installed power) and most them are crystalline silicon based solar cells which responses the wavelength under 1.1 or 1.2 µm.…”

“…The impact of solar spectral irradiance on the yield of different technologies was studied for four locations in [20]. The study in [22] states that the spectrum has little effect for low gap materials between seasons, for clear skies, but not for large band gap materials. Figure 1 presents the external quantum efficiency of four module technologies, for which the present study calculates the operating temperature.…”

“…This effect also depends on the technology as well as material which decides the sensitivity of the PV devices [9]. The variations in incident irradiation and solar spectral content have a higher effect on multi-junction and high-bandgap devices compared with single-junction and low-bandgap devices [10][11][12]. Theoretical and experimental studies have illustrated that the actual harvesting efficiency, which is usually lower than the efficiency under standard test conditions, varies during the year and the drop in harvesting efficiency can be attributed to irradiance and temperature as major loss channels [12,13].…”
