Spectral absorption of biomass burning aerosol determined from retrieved single scattering albedo during ARCTAS

Abstract: Abstract. Actinic flux, as well as aerosol chemical and optical properties, were measured aboard the NASA DC-8 aircraft during the ARCTAS (Arctic Research of the Composition of the Troposphere from Aircraft and Satellites) mission in Spring and Summer 2008. These measurements were used in a radiative transfer code to retrieve spectral (350-550 nm) aerosol single scattering albedo

“…More complex multi-wavelength methods for absorption attribution have been reported and mostly use satellite, aircraft, or ground-based measurements of multi-spectral aerosol optical depth, actinic flux, scattering, or back scattering and extinction Arola et al, 2011;Kaufman et al, 2002;Schuster et al, 2005;Bergstrom et al, 2004;Corr et al, 2012). These methods use radiation models and complex Mie modelling retrievals to determine particle type (fine vs. coarse mode), and multi-spectral particle refractive index, SSA and absorption.…”

“…Updyke et al, 2012). Values of AAE for BrC up to 9.5 have been observed (wavelength pairs: 400, 700 nm) (Andreae and Gelencser, 2006, and references therein; Rizzo et al, 2011;Flowers et al, 2010;Lewis et al, 2008;Corr et al, 2012) while AAEs for desert dust range from 2.5 to 6.0 (wavelength pairs: 467 nm, 660 nm) (e.g. Weinzierl et al, 2011).…”

“…Our data cannot differentiate between inorganic and organic nitrates, however these compounds remain a possibility as the contributors to BrC absorption. Other studies show BrC absorption efficiency increasing as it is oxidized (Corr et al, 2012;Marley et al, 2009;Adler et al, 2011;Bones et al, 2010), presumably from processing of emitted POM or secondary POM formed from VOC emissions, to produce low-visible and UV-active chromophores. Our data does not provide an opportunity to (Lack et al, 2012b).…”

“…AbsorptionÅngstrom exponent is often interrogated for indications of BB influenced particles, where it is assumed that anÅ Abs > 1 is indicative of absorption by more than just BC, such as dust and BrC (Gyawali et al, 2009;Lewis et al, 2008;Corr et al, 2012;Yang et al, 2009;Favez et al, 2009). There is a correlation between wavelength dependency of absorption for this heavily BB influenced plume (Å Abs ) and f 60 /f 44 (Fig.…”

“…Generally, the AAE of externally mixed EC is 1.0 for EC-contained particle with < 50 nm diameter (Moosmuller et al 2010), while the AAE of internally mixed EC by the presence of transparent coatings (non-absorbing coating) can reach to 1.7 (Gyawali et al 2009;Lack and Cappa 2010). Moreover, the AAE of internally mixed EC by the presence of non-EC absorbers (e.g., brown carbon, which is mainly emitted from biomass burning) coatings can increase even higher (Corr et al 2012). The AAE can be calculated from the b ap at the wavelength of 880 and 370 nm in this study (Lack and Langridge 2013).…”
