On multi-nuclei features of some Markarian galaxies

“…Due to nuclear activity, the galaxies drawn from the list of the First Byurakan Survey (Markarian 1967, 1969; Markarian & Lipovetskii 1969, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976a,b; Markarian, Lipovetskii & Stepanian 1977a,b; Markarian, Lipovetskii & Stepanian 1979a,b,c; Markarian et al 1981; Kazarian & Khachikian 1985), and which are collectively known as the Markarian galaxies (Weedman & Khachikian 1968, 1969; Mazzarella & Balzano 1986), possess strong blue excess and ultraviolet (UV) continuum radiation. Markarian galaxies do not form a homogeneous group of galaxies but span all Hubble types, Zwicky galaxies, Haro objects, BL Lacs, etc.…”

Luminosity function of faint galaxies with ultraviolet continuum

“…The high spatial densities of low--luminosity galaxies with ultraviolet continuum were noted in [16][17][18] [4][5][6][7][8][9], some of these last are quite indistinguishable from stars both in the low-dispersion spectra as well as direct photographs. Among them several objects are low-luminosity galaxies.…”

“…Among the 83 objects considered, eight galaxies have been reliably classified as Seyferts, and a Seyfert nature can be suspected for three more of them [4][5][6][7]31 It is probable that such objects must be taken into account in the calculation of the bright end of the luminosity function~ In this case, completeness of the second survey may reach ~17m5. The proportion of Seyferts and quasistellar objects among galaxies with ultraviolet continuum also increases appreciably.…”

“…From the characteristics of the hot intergalactic gas it is also possible to make deductions about the distortions of the microwave background in the radio range in the direction of a cluster of galaxies (Syunyaev--Zel'dovich effect). In this effect, photons of the microwave background are transferred from the Rayleigh--Jeans part of the spectrum to the submillimeter region by inverse Compton scattering on hot electrons [8,9]. As a result, one should observe a decrease in the brightness temperature T R of the background at millimeter and centimeter wavelengths and an increase of T R at submillimeter wavelengths.…”

“…The results of the investigations are given in [4][5][6], which contain data on 358 objects in 48 square degrees, 223 of these being galaxies. Of these, 75, i.e., one third, have an appreciable ultraviolet continuum in their spectra.…”
