Speckle Interferometric Technique for Astronomical Observations

Abstract

The speclde imaging is a photographic technique that resolves objects viewed through severely distorted media. The results are insensitive to the errors caused by apparent size o/the isoplanalic patch and the telescope aberrations. In this paper, a short descriptions of the atmospheric turbulence and jts effect on the flat wavefront from a stellar source is presented; the shortcomings o/the conventionallong·expo· sure images in the present 0/ Earth's atmosphere are discussed. The advantages 0/ the speckle interferometric technique over conventional imaging are enumerated. The technical details o/the method, basic Fourier optics. data analysis procedures are also described. The data processing methods that are implemented in Indian Institute 0/ Astrophysics. in order to decipher Fourier phase are described as well.
