Specificity of affective dynamics of bipolar and major depressive disorder

Abstract: ObjectiveHere, we examine whether the dynamics of the four dimensions of the circumplex model of affect assessed by ecological momentary assessment (EMA) differ among those with bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD).MethodsParticipants aged 11–85 years (n = 362) reported momentary sad, anxious, active, and energetic dimensional states four times per day for 2 weeks. Individuals with lifetime mood disorder subtypes of bipolar‐I, bipolar‐II, and MDD derived from a semistructured clinical inte… Show more

“…Most research on affect dynamics specifically examines whether certain dynamic patterns characterize psychological (mal)adjustment, or even specific psychological disorders (e.g., depression and bipolar disorder, Stapp et al, 2023;Thompson et al, 2021;eating disorders, Williams-Kerver et al, 2020;borderline personality disorder;Houben & Kuppens, 2020;and generally across internalizing and external disorders, Scott et al, 2020). However, much of this research has substantial methodological flaws, as detailed by Dejonckheere et al (2019): the majority of studies only examine the association between specific affective dynamic indices and psychopathology without taking into account the mean or overlap with other related indices.…”
