Semiotika memiliki peran untuk menunjukkan pentingnya makna tanda dalam pembelajaran matematika. Lingkaran merupakan bagian dari matematika yang pemahaman konseptualnya sangat bergantung pada interpretasi tanda, terutama dalam proses pemecahan masalah yang melibatkan proses kognitif. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan proses kognitif siswa dalam pemecahan masalah, melalui hubungan antar komponen triadik (semiosis) Peirce, yaitu representamen (R) - object (O) - interpretant (I). Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif melalui tahapan pemberian pertanyaan (masalah), penentuan subjek, wawancara, analisis data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Subjek dipilih berdasarkan prestasi belajar. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan tiga tahapan dalam proses semiotik: 1) representamen (membuat tanda), 2) objek (mengidentifikasi objek, 3) interpretan (menginterpretasi tanda). Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini penting untuk membantu meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan di Indonesia dengan memberikan informasi tentang bagaimana siswa dapat memperoleh pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang geometri.

Semiotic reasoning believed as a model of learning leads students to be able to have multiple interpretations of a certain object or sign. This study aimed to describe the shift in the interpretation of fourth-grade elementary school students in semiotic reasoning in constructing rectangular concepts. The procedure of this research was exploratory descriptive. The subjects in this study were three fourth-grade students in private elementary schools in Jember who performed semiotic reasoning and experienced a shift in interpretation. This shift in the interpretation occurred at the stage of identifying objects. When working individually, the subjects considered that folded paper was rectangular. After discussing in a group, the interpretation of the subject shifted. The subjects found that the folded paper was not rectangular. This shift in the interpretation also occurred at the sign-making stage. Images made by the subject were rectangular. Therefore, the subject made a rectangular image according to the object that has been identified. When working individually, the subject was not able to identify the characteristics of rectangular objects carefully. Therefore, the characteristics of rectangular-shaped objects were found inappropriate. After discussing it with friends in the group, the subject's interpretation underwent a shift. The interpretation shifts were in object identification, making signs and making meanings. The shift that occurred at the stage of making meaning resulted in a change in the students' interpretation of in-setting concepts.

The experimental study was designed to investigate the effectiveness ofKumon method in comparison with traditional lecture method in theteaching of Mathematics to grade-5. Kumon is a math and readingenrichment program, which provides practice and instruction to eachindividual. This helps to think and work independently. The hypothesisof this study was that in Mathematics, Grade-5 students have nosignificant difference in their academic achievement treated by Kumonmethod and by traditional lecture method. The objective of the study wasto determine the effectiveness of Kumon method for academicachievement of children in Mathematics. All grade-5 students of Fazaiainter colleges of Rawalpindi and Islamabad was the population. Clustersampling technique was used. One of the three Fazaia colleges (juniorsection) was selected randomly. All grade-5 students of the selectedcluster formed the sample of the study. Data was collected and analyzedby applying t-test and recommendations were given on the basis offindings of the study. This study shows that Kumon method is moreeffective for teaching mathematics to Grade 5 students in comparisonwith traditional lecture method and equally helpful in teachingmathematics effectively to boys and girls.
