Specification and Performance Indicators of AeroRing—A Multiple-Ring Ethernet Network for Avionics Embedded Systems

Abstract: The complexity and costs of the avionics communication architecture are increasing exponentially with the increasing number of embedded computers over the last few decades. To limit the cabling complexity and the deployment costs of such a communication architecture, we specify a new Gigabit multiple-ring Ethernet network, called AeroRing, while meeting the avionics requirements. First, we describe the current Aircraft Data Communication Network (ADCN) to highlight the main characteristics and requirements tha… Show more

“…For instance, refs. [6,7] explored new topologies for Ethernet-based avionics networks with a focus on ring topologies. The authors compared the AFDX topology of the Airbus A380 with different versions of an equivalent Ethernet ring topology, some of which achieved better delays.…”

“…For the ring topology, Mohsen Jahanshahi and Fathollah Bistouni [ 6 ] proposed two ring redundancy topology architectures to enhance the reliability of the network. Ahmed Amari and Ahlem Mifdaoui [ 21 ] proposed duplicated mono-ring and multiple-ring topologies, which increase the reliability of the network. As far as we know, no researcher has designed redundancy for the tree topology to improve network reliability.…”

“…To remedy the above problems, we have specified a new redundancy protocol, called QoS 2 -Aware Ring Redundancy Protocol (QoS-ARRP), with the following key advantages: (a) support of mixed-criticality traffic pattern, (b) low configuration effort and (c) low deployment costs. This redundancy protocol has been incorporated in AeroRing network [14], a multiple-ring Ethernet network for avionics.…”
