Specific versus Generalized Locus of Control Scales Related to Job Satisfaction

Abstract: This study compared, in the area of job satisfaction, scores on Rotter's I-E scale and on a new internal-external locus of control scale designed specifically for the work context. The correlation of .39 with the Job Descriptive Index arrived at by using the specific scale is significantly higher than the correlation of —.16 obtained with the Rotter scale. Data suggest this new scale could be useful.

“…This perspective suggests that the construct is more effectively operationalized in a domain-specific sense. For example, Safety Locus of Control (Jones and Wuebker 1985); Work Locus of Control (Spector 1988); Job Satisfaction Locus of Control (Pettersen 1985); Health Locus of Control (Levenson 1972, Reid and Ware 1974, Wallston and Wallston 1981 L. Smith and I. Iskra-Golec Wallston et al 1976, Coelho 1980). An internally oriented shiftwork-specific Shiftwork Locus of Control measure was developed to reflect this thinking on Locus of Control theory (Smith et al 1995).…”

“…Ng et al (2006) reported a positive mean relationship between internal LOC and overall job satisfaction; however, their research did not differentiate between the various types of LOC. Researchers have argued that using an LOC scale specific to the work environment would result in stronger relationships with work attitudes (Pettersen, 1985;Spector, 1988). Consequently, some studies have used a work LOC measure that assesses an individual's general belief about their control at work.…”

“…It was adopted by 43 studies (19 per cent) and had an average reliability of 0.78 (based on 40 samples). Other less commonly used scales of LOC included Andriessen's (1972), Levenson's (1974), Paulhaus' (1983), Pettersen's (1985, and others. Further, we included those studies that measured only one specific facet of LOC (Levenson, 1974).…”
