Specific Reaction Patterns to Distinct Positive Emotional Cues Related to Incentive Motivation in Dependence of the Taq1A-Polymorphism: Molecular Genetic Associations of Early and Late Event-Related Potentials

Abstract: Background/Aims: Early and late event-related potential (ERP) responses, representing early subconscious and late motivational processes, were recorded for positive emotional words related to ‘wanting' and ‘liking', in dependence of the dopamine-related Taq1A genotype (ANKK1/DRD2). Research suggests that ‘wanting' as opposed to ‘liking' is related to dopaminergic processes. Therefore, it was hypothesized that risk allele carriers of the Taq1A polymorphism exhibit late ERP changes in reaction to words represent… Show more

“…Regarding included stimulus categories, no significant differences were observed in neural reactivity to positive vs. neutral stimuli. This contradicts previous research ( Schupp et al, 2000 ; Bublatzky et al, 2014 ; Munk et al, 2016 ). However, neural reactivity has proven to be arousal- rather than valence dependent ( Schupp et al, 2000 ; Leite et al, 2012 ).…”

“…As OCs suppress ovulation and inhibit conception, they might also reduce motivational salience of erotic stimuli. Furthermore, the LPP has been associated with activity of the dopaminergic reward system ( Cuthbert et al, 2000 ; Munk et al, 2016 ). Activity of this system is modulated by estradiol and testosterone, both of which are downregulated by OC intake ( Rapkin et al, 2006 ; Zimmerman et al, 2014 ; Montoya and Bos, 2017 ).…”

“…It is related to early attentional selection and reflects automatic processing of emotional stimuli (27)(28)(29)(30)(31). Previous EST studies have found that the EPN amplitude induced by emotional words or pictures (positive and negative) was larger (i.e., more negative) than that induced by neutral words or pictures (32)(33)(34)(35). In a study classifying facial and non-facial stimuli with emotional information, Xin et al (31) found that EPN was significantly delayed and lower (i.e., more positive) in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients compared to the control group.…”
