Specific inulin‐type fructan fibers protect against autoimmune diabetes by modulating gut immunity, barrier function, and microbiota homeostasis

Abstract: Our data demonstrate that ITF(l) but not ITF(s) delays the development of T1D via modulation of gut-pancreatic immunity, barrier function, and microbiota homeostasis.

“…This may be a possible mechanism for the observed enhancing effects of hMOs and NDCs and its beneficial effects on gut microbiota that need the glycocalyx to adhere to the gut epithelium, with subsequent positive effects on fermentation products short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and vitamins . Also, it may be a possible mechanistic explanation for the hMOs and NDCs induced enhanced gut barrier function . As shown in our current study the glycocalyx reinforcing effects of the tested food ingredients are due to direct effects on the epithelial cells and not induced by possible microbiota effects as all tests were performed in the absence of bacteria.…”

“…Interestingly, we observed that those pigs fed IN, WB and MIX had a low concentration of acetic acid and total SCFAs in colon. The action of wheat bran fibre depends on the composition arabinoxylan of wheat bran and its particle size, and the different effects of inulin on energy metabolism are related with its various type and chain length (Chen et al., 2015; Chen et al, 2017; Koo, Hossain, & Nyachoti, 2017; Molist, Manzanilla, Pérez, & Nyachoti, 2012; Molist et al., 2009). “…By tuning down excessive innate responses, promotion of tissue‐protective mechanisms and stimulating specific adaptive immunity, fermentable inulin fiber, and SCFAs create an immune equilibrium that protects against immune‐associated pathologies (Trompette et al., ). Long‐chain inulin‐type fructan fiber protects against autoimmune disease by modulating microbiota homeostasis and gut immunity (K. Chen et al., ). Moreover, fermentable DF (pectin) can shape the immunological environment in the lung and suppress allergic airway disease in mice (Trompette et al., ).…”
