The ability to precisely compute the location and direction of sounds in external space is a crucial perceptual process to efficiently interact with dynamic environments. Little is known, however, about how the human brain implements spatial hearing. In our study, we used fMRI to characterize the brain activity of humans listening to left, right, up and down moving as well as static sounds. Whole brain univariate results contrasting moving and static sounds varying in their location revealed a robust functional preference for auditory motion in bilateral human Planum Temporale (hPT). Importantly, multivariate pattern classification analysis showed that hPT contains information about both auditory motion directions and, to a lesser extent, sound source locations. More precisely, we observed that our classifier successfully decoded opposite axes of motion (vertical versus horizontal) but was less able to classify opposite within-axis direction (left versus right or up versus down); reminiscent of the axis of motion organization observed in the middle-temporal cortex for vision. Further multivariate analyses demonstrated that even if motion direction and location rely on partially shared pattern geometries in PT, the responses elicited by static and moving sounds were however highly distinct. Altogether our results demonstrate that human PT codes for auditory motion and location but that the underlying neural computation linked to motion processing is more reliable and partially distinct from the one supporting sound source location.All rights reserved. Motion perception is a key visual modality implicated in a wide range of critical functional roles. In addition to our ability to perceive moving objects, motion processing is involved in guiding locomotion, extracting object shape, figure‐ground segregation, capturing attention, and interpreting actions of our conspecifics. Here, we review advancements in our understanding of visual motion perception. We begin by describing the basic properties of motion, along with the computational challenges underlying detection and integration of motion signals. Next, we review more complex motion processes, discussing global motion perception, higher‐order motion, motion adaptation, motion in three dimensions, and biological motion. An important focus of this chapter is on interactions between motion perception and other sensory and cognitive modalities, including position, learning, attention, awareness, working memory, and multisensory processing. We also review notable examples of atypical motion processing in aging, cortical blindness, akinetopsia, amblyopia, schizophrenia, and autism spectrum disorder. For these topics, we cover key evidence from psychophysics, neurophysiology, neuroimaging, and computational modeling with an aim to provide a better understanding of the mechanisms that underlie our remarkable ability to take advantage of motion signals in the world. Finally, we highlight potentially interesting future directions in motion research.

Spectral and topological analyses of the cortical representation of the head position: Does hypnotizability matter?

Introduction The aim of this exploratory study was to assess the EEG correlates of head positions (which have never been studied in humans) in participants with different psychophysiological characteristics, as encoded by their hypnotizability scores. This choice is motivated by earlier studies suggesting different processing of vestibular/neck proprioceptive information in subjects with high (highs) and low (lows) hypnotizability scores maintaining their head rotated toward one side ( RH ). Methods We analyzed EEG signals recorded in 20 highs and 19 lows in basal conditions (head forward) and during RH using spectral analysis, which captures changes localized to specific recording sites, and topological data analysis ( TDA ), which instead describes large‐scale differences in processing and representing sensorimotor information. Results Spectral analysis revealed significant differences related to head position for alpha 1, beta 2, beta 3, and gamma bands, but not to hypnotizability. TDA instead revealed global hypnotizability‐related differences in the strengths of the correlations among recording sites during RH . Significant changes were observed in lows on the left parieto‐occipital side and in highs in right frontoparietal region. Significant differences between the two groups were found in the occipital region, where changes were larger in lows than in highs . Conclusions This study reports finding of the EEG correlates of changes in the head posture for the first time, indicating that hypnotizability is related to the head posture representation/processing on large‐scale networks and that spectral and topological data analyses provide complementary results.
