Species-Specific Feeding Marks of Stink Bugs on Rice Grain in Leptocorisa chinensis Dallas (Hemiptera: Alydidae), Lagynotomus elongatus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) and Cletus punctiger (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Coreidae).

Abstract: The rice stink bugs, Leptocorisa chinensis, Lagynotomus elongatus and Cletus punctiger, are important cosmetic pests that cause pecky rice. The first step towards the establishment of effective and environment-friendly rice bug management is to specify the species that is most responsible for pecky rice formation. For this purpose we investigated species-specific feeding marks on the grain with caged insects. The feeding marks caused by L. chinensis and L. elongatus were mostly found on the grain surface along… Show more

“…Similar to the rice leaf bug, many species of stink bugs cause pecky rice (e.g., Harper et al, 1993;Jahn et al, 2004;Takeuchi et al, 2004) and invade paddy fields after the heading of rice (Nakasuji, 1973;Rashid et al, 2006). Flowering rice panicle odor also may be attractive to other species of rice-ear bugs and may cause their invasions into paddy fields.…”

“…These two types of stinkbugs live in the furrow agricultural field. They have darts to suck at unhulled rice grains (Ishimoto, 2007, Takeuchi et al, 2004. At the Post-harvest time, raw unhulled rice was stored in the desiccators to keep the harvest time moisture at the level of 13-38%.…”
