“…These genotypes probably represent only one (or very few) genets; the close genetic relationships of the samples indicate that clonal mechanisms, i.e., indeterminate shoot growth and vegetative reproduction s.l., must account for most of the present spatial patterns and patch dynamics. This is further substantiated since generative reproduction was not observed in the studied R. rugosum populations and is probably very rare or even absent in most Central European populations (e.g., Hedwig 1801;Brotherus 1923;Herzog 1926;Lawton 1971;Rohrer 1985Rohrer , 1999Longton 1990;Düll 1994;Sauer 2001), despite of the widespread distribution of the taxon.…”

“…13.b) (McNeill et al, 2006) fixes the starting point for the names of mosses as 1 January 1801, and associates this date with the publication Species muscorum frondosorum of Johannes Hedwig (Hedwig, 1801). Effectively, binomial moss names published prior to this work are invalid.…”

“…Although Hedwig (1801) described from Europe two species, L. polycarpa and L. paludosa, the latter one was considered as a variety of the former already by authors of 19th century (e.g. Schimper, 1860).…”
