“…Agricultural modernisation, such as agrochemical application, irrigation management, and farmland consolidation, has caused biodiversity loss in rice-field ecosystems for the last half-century (Natuhara, 2013;Washitani, 2007). For fish that inhabit rice fields for at least part of their life history, differences in water level between rice fields and irrigation ditches caused by the alteration of irrigation systems negatively influence abundance and composition by preventing their access (Katano et al, 2003;Katayama, Saitoh, Amano, & Miyashita, 2011). For example, the pond loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus uses rice fields as an alternative to floodplains for spawning and growth (Saitoh, Katano, & Koizumi, 1988;Tanaka, 1999), and a water level difference of only 50 cm at the entrance of rice fields prevents the fish from migrating to spawn (Katayama et al, 2011).…”
