Species conservation profiles of tarantula spiders (Araneae, Theraphosidae) listed on CITES

Abstract: BackgroundCITES is an international agreement between governments to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. Regarding spiders, all species listed in CITES are tarantulas. They are included in Appendix II, meaning that they are species that are not necessarily now threatened with extinction but that they may become so unless trade is closely controlled. Many tarantulas are legally and illegally traded in the pet market and they are one of the mos… Show more

“…To meet the needs of the scholars, some scientific journals have developed specific publication types compliant with the IUCN Red List species assessments (Cardoso et al 2016). Among the invertebrate experts, arachnological community is especially active in publishing species assessments at various scales in the form of academic papers (Seppälä et al 2018, Branco et al 2019, Fukushima et al 2019. Similar surveys have recently been published for moths, cave-dwelling arthropods (Borges et al 2018(Borges et al , 2019 and an endangered species of rattan palm from Africa (Cosiaux et al 2017) to name a few.…”

“…Illegal wildlife trade in invertebrates is rarely a priority of law enforcement, although it often targets high-value rare or endangered species. A trade which unbeknown to many often included spiders (Fukushima et al 2019).…”

“…For example, we missed some studies on taxonomy that used SDMs to assist species delimitations, as these did not mention the methodology in their keywords, title or abstract. Similarly, SDMs have recently begun to be routinely used for assessing terrestrial arthropod risk of extinction (Branco et al, 2019;Fukushima et al, 2019;Milano et al, 2021;Seppälä et al, 2018aSeppälä et al, , 2018bSeppälä et al, , 2018cSeppälä et al, , 2018d, but most of these studies were missed for the same reason. Furthermore, for many groups, especially vertebrates, the authors may not mention the higher taxonomic ranks included in our query but exclusively the species, genus or family, which will not be captured.…”
