Speciation of arsenic in tube‐well water samples collected from West Bengal, India, by high‐performance liquid chromatography–inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Abstract: The objective of this study was to report on the arsenic species present in tube-well water samples collected from West Bengal, India, especially dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) and monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), whose existence has not been reported in the literature. The water samples were collected from Jalangi Gram Panchayet (Murshidabad district, West Bengal, India). The samples were speciated for arsenic 11 days after collection. The samples were collected in duplicate. One part was acidified with nitric acid … Show more

“…Therefore, reagents in the blank did not induce interferences in the chromatograms. The presence of a high content of chloride (Cl -) in the matrices could lead to the misidentification of As with ICP-MS detection [45]. As commented above, the ion intensity at m/z 75 ( 75 As) was monitored and additionally, the ion intensities at …”

“…Arsenic in drinking water is dominated by iAs as pentavalent (As V ) and trivalent arsenite (As III ) [14,15]. In humans, the primary iAs metabolic pathway is methylation, which involves reduction and oxidative methylation [16][17][18].…”

“…The major peak was eluted at a retention time corresponding to AB and/or iAs III ; high concentrations of chloride in the samples resulted in splitting and broadening of the iAs V and MMA V peaks ( Figure S2b) [41]. To confirm whether the first peak shown in Figure S2c was AB or iAs III and whether iAs V was contained in the basal diet or not, the samples were applied to an anion-exchange column ( Figure S2g).…”
